Bridges is a special education program designed for middle and high school students whose needs require that they attend a separate school program until they can be educated in a less restrictive environment. Because of their emotional disabilities, these
students often display a range of characteristics which may include extreme distractibility, depression, poor self-esteem, impulsiveness and poor decision making skills. These students may be unresponsive, verbally abusive, physically aggressive or noticeably withdrawn. They may refuse to follow rules or adhere to social norms. Special education and related services are key in breaking the cycle of emotional liability and school failure. A student's ability to transition to a less restrictive setting is based on fulfilling the goals and objectives of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and an assessment of the student's behavior. The program will accommodate a maximum of 60 students.
Entrance and Exit Process
The Special Education Central Educational Placement Team (CEPT) is the single point of entry for students entering the Bridges Program. The CEPT reviews referrals from schools requesting a change in placement based on students' performance on their IEP. In order for a student to be placed in the Bridges Program, the student's IEP must indicate the need and be approved for specialized instruction and services for emotional disabilities. Students are transitioned to a less restrictive setting when their IEP goals have been mastered or indicate the need for a change in placement.
